Showtime as an OTT option would be a game changer
Can You Watch Showtime Without Paying for Cable? It could Happen. The first major sign that the pay TV industry bundled model may be starting to crumble have arrived. Fierce Cable reported today that CBS Corp. COO Joseph Ianniello told investors in New York that there is nothing contractual to prevent Showtime from being offered as an over the top service to customers without any pay TV requirement. While the dream of many cord cutters is to hear the same sort of statement from HBO make the same announcement, the implications of the statement are monumental. Showtime and HBO have taken turns over the years with various “It” series. While HBO rules the cable roost at the moment with Game of Thrones and broke new ground years ago with the Sopranos. Showtime has been heralded for security thriller Homeland and is the current home of Inside The NFL. Other
major Showtime series from the past include Dexter and The L Word.
Could Showtime Be Sold Without Cable?
Ianniello pointed out that there are 10 million people who have broadband Internet but do not have a pay TV package. The most common complaint about Netflix is that it lacks recently released movies. Despite this complaint the service has 50 million subscribers, more in fact then HBO. If Showtime becomes available over the top it could instantly be on the same level as Netflix. In fact if Showtime were to offer a package along the lines of HBO GO with a live streaming option to go along with a full library of on demand content to go along with its sports offerings it could change the entire industry. Showtime despite its notoriety pales in comparison to HBO in popularity. But if it were to become the favorite legal way to watch new cutting edge content for the cord cutting community all bets could be off. It could make Showtime hip It could even lead to a lot more cutting. This is getting very interesting.
