Increased WiFi and Network performance
A major addition to the MINIX NEO UI is the inclusion of both an external and internal WiFi antenna to maximize WiFi performance as well as support for gigabit Ethernet where available. We regularly recommend a wired connection for the best streaming performance.

OTA Updates
Users will be able to update their devices to the latest firmware builds without any need to manually add them. This is an important feature that many devices ignore. If you have ever had to figure out which firmware is needed to upgrade a device you know exactly what we mean.

Solid Build

The new design of the MINIX NEO UI places all of the USB ports on the same side.
The new design of the MINIX NEO UI places all of the USB ports on the same side.

The new device will feature the familiar smooth black look external with a MINIX branded top but in a departure from previous models all 3 USB ports will be on the same side. Users looking to connect multiple USB devices should utilize USB hubs in order to maximize space. The MINIX NEO UI will also sport a larger heat-sink than previous models to handle the increased power. It should be durable for a long period of time.

Support for Kodi
At the center of any Android Streaming hub is Kodi. Using the Android version of the popular media center the MINIX NEO UI allows users to access all of their networked media as well as access numerous streaming apps and configurations.

An Apple rumor mill is propagating an unsubstantiated statement from an un-named customer service rep that Apple TV will support Amazon’s Video service in the next few weeks. Considering the long history of the service being absent on Apple’s TV connected devices this would be quite a departure. Users with IOS devices can already access the service via AirPlay but a native app would change the narrative in the streaming world where reporters have regularly pointed out that Apple TV does not support Amazon Instant.

The mere fact that this idea is based on something a customer service rep said causes me to be highly suspicious as customer service reps are often terribly uninformed or may have even misunderstood the question. But in today’s hyper news cycle things like this boil up very quickly. We will pay attention to this during the next month.

Apple recently added new categories to its app store.

The Apple TV App store was a great leap forward for Apple in its quest to become America’s favorite streaming device, but it was lacking something. The App store only had two categories to choose from as compared to an exhaustive category list on normal IOS devices. We noted this in our original review which will have to be updated. The new categories include Games, Education, Entertainment, Health and Fitness, Lifestyle, News, Sports. While there are not tons of apps in each category we can expect that to change going forward.

Roku SE is one example of Roku's numerous models.

The Roku SE, the lower end and far lower cost streaming box from Roku selling for $25.00 has already sold out for customers attempting to purchase the device from its website. The device is also currently sold out via websites for Walmart and Best Buy. The device is a nice intro model for streamers who have not bought in on the HDTV universe or even those looking for a simple streaming device with enough pep to handle Netflix and less interest in more high demand performance apps.

Roku fans will be able to pick up a Roku SE from Best Buy and Walmart on Friday if they are willing to brave the crowds.
