Press Release

MARCH 29, 2016– SAN DIEGO, CA – Younity, the home media server that unifies media across devices, today launched its younity app for Android. The app enables users to create their own private streaming service with the freedom to access all their media files stored on their computer(s) from any Android device. With the younity app, users can access and stream all of their videos, photos, music and documents stored on Windows or Mac computers from their mobile devices.

“Our goal is to help people unify their fragmented content by making all their files accessible from any screen that they have,” said Erik Caso, co-founder and chief executive officer of younity. “Whether it’s listening to favorite music playlists, streaming movies on the go, or accessing photos from a recent vacation—younity gives users ultimate access to all their content, anytime and anywhere.”

In the last several months alone, younity has unified more than 2 billion files representing more than eleven petabytes of data that is streamed directly between user devices.

Younity on Android Features:

  • Access and stream your video and music collections on-demand.
  • Stream all your iTunes music to your Android devices for free.
  • Search and access all the photos on your computers, including Lightroom catalogs and Apple Photo libraries.
  • Access documents across multiple computers on the go.
  • Unify all your content and media libraries across your computers into one organized menu in the younity app.
  • Search all your content at once.
  • Download any of your media to your mobile devices for unlimited offline access.
  • Keep large files off of your Android smartphone, but still have access to them.

By connecting devices together and creating a private, peer-to-peer streaming service, younity maintains maximum privacy and security for users— files are never uploaded and there is no file-related information stored online. All user content remains safely and securely stored on their computers.

Younity offers a simple, secure and free alternative to services like Plex’s Premium Plex Pass and solves a major pain point for consumers who have a large amount of media spread across multiple devices. Younity’s patented technology also gives users access to their media libraries—which make up over ninety percent of content on their computers—such as iTunes catalogs, Adobe Lightroom libraries and more.

Younity works cross-platform, regardless of operating system, enabling Android users to connect to both Mac and PC computers simultaneously.

How To Set Up:

Younity on Android is free and easy to set up.

  1. First, install younity on your computer (download at www.getyounity.com)
  2. Download the younity mobile app on your mobile devices.

Netflix and Amazon have gotten a great deal of attention for producing original content. Their shows have been nominated and won Emmy nominations and have become a defining factor in the golden age of television. Production of shows exclusively for Streaming services is not only providing fans with something new to watch but even allowing projects that might have otherwise been discarded to live on. But the two giants of original content streaming have two very different approaches to the art form and from my perspective Netflix is winning out in terms of quantity and quality. As Nielson begins to monitor streaming in the way that it monitors everything else we might know once and for all what is being watched and what isn’t.

But even as both companies continue to hide which shows bring in viewership it is not difficult to make some assertions based on a couple of factors we can easily observe.

Renewal
House of Cards recently launched its fourth season which seems likely enough to end with Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood being named Emperor of the world. Orange Is The New Black has been granted a third season, Daredevil recently rolled out its second season and even the heavily panned “Fuller House” has already been greenlit for a second season. These are not Netflix’s only original series to receive multiple seasons. Amazon has begun to find traction with some of its most recent series Mozzart in the Jungle, Transparent and The Man in the High Castle will be back. Bosch found its way to a second season as well. It’s multiple seasons that will eventually tell the true story of success. At the moment Netflix has more series that have had more than two seasons including the recently cancelled Lilyhammer.

Amazon
Amazon’s most high-profile show by far,” Transparent” has been a hit for the company and won the Emmy for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musicalin 2015. So Amazon wins when it counts right? Not exactly. Transparent was not the result of Amazon’s traditional approach to original series. The typical approach from Amazon is to allow producers to bid for limited opportunities for a pilot. Amazon then greenlights 6 pilots and puts the content out on the Internet for the viewing audience to take in and provide feedback. Amazon then takes that data and chooses to make the shows that receive the most positive feedback into series. This method gave us the highly regarded “The Man In The High Castle” this season, which received overwhelmingly high reviews from viewers and critics alike. The show which is based on the book of the same title by Phillip K Dick is set in an alternative reality where the US lost WW II and was incorporated into the Japanese and German empires. But truth is that is where the excitement ends for Amazon. As far as entertainment aimed at an adult audience Amazon has had very few series reach second seasons and has gotten more buzz for not renewing series like “Betas”.

What Netflix does differently
Netflix bases the series it is going to launch on data culled from its entire user base. It knows for instance whether you prefer ”Sharknado” to “The Square”. Because of this the company can crafts their shows and accepts projects that they already know will be likely successes. They are giving their customer base programming based on what they know for a fact that their customers regularly watch and avoiding the opinions of  minority audience of people who for one watched a pilot for a show during a limited period of time and then took enough time to fill out feedback forms and or post comments on the selections Amazon profile. Netflix had a number of Marvel properties streaming for a number of years both live action and animated. It could dive into the data and see that their audience enjoyed comic book related content so partnering with Disney to produce Marvel based TV shows was a no-brainer. A truly ingenious move was integrating the new shows into the Marvel movie universe which invited the millions of movie fans to check out the new product in order to feel connected with the rest of the story that has been unfolding both on the big screen and in Agents of Shield, which also streams on the service. Amazon does not seem to think that far ahead.

Plex has announced a major update to its Roku app through the Plex forum. The update does not include older Roku models such as the LT and Roku HD. The new version of Plex includes a more powerful video player and a number of functions unique to the Roku 4. The new features add a lot more options to the otherwise very clean interface that Plex put in place with its most recent Roku app.

“We would like to express our gratitude to the enthusiastic users who submitted thousands of ideas and suggestions during the 6-month long beta program, helping to shape the future of DSM and create an unparalleled experience,” said James Chen, CEO of Synology Inc. “The need for cloud-based collaboration tools that don’t sacrifice users’ privacy and ownership of data will continue to grow. With DSM 6.0, we aim to be at the forefront of this trend, helping professionals work together while maintaining an efficient data protection solution.”

“With DSM 6.0, Synology brings advanced technologies that go beyond the management and storage of enterprise data, and are designed to enable Synology NAS as a fully equipped server that boosts productivity and efficiency in business environments,” said Michael Zimmerman, Vice President and General Manager of Connectivity, Storage and Infrastructure at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. “We applaud Synology on its newest offering, and are excited that our innovative 32-bit and 64-bit ARMADA® embedded processors, ranging from single to multi-core ARM Cortex®-A9, -A53 and -A72 device families, are helping power feature-rich applications and services.”

Key features of DSM 6.0 include:

Ÿ   Virtualization for flexible resource allocation: The new Virtual DSM (beta) and Docker DSM packages enable businesses to run multiple instances of DSM on a single Synology NAS, allowing them to consolidate multiple physical servers and build a reliable, flexible, and multi-tenant environment.

Ÿ   Secure and intuitive mail solution: The MailPlus and MailPlus Server (beta) packages allow your business to set up a secure, private mail server featuring active-active design for high-availability and load balancing, and at the same time give your employees a modern mail client for receiving, sending, and organizing messages with labels, separate inboxes, and filters.

Ÿ   Private cloud collaboration suite: With the SpreadSheet package, you can create, edit, and collaborate on spreadsheets with other people — using just your Synology NAS and a browser. Note Station introduces an offline app for Google Chrome and makes it possible to create beautiful graphs, handy to-do lists, and presentations in a simple way.

Ÿ   Business-ready storage and backup: With the PetaSpace package, a single shared folder can now be located across multiple volumes and be expanded over 1PB, making it easy for IT administrators to manage large spaces. Snapshot Replication provides businesses with multi-site, up to every 5 minutes backups, ensuring optimal recover times if the unexpected occurs. With block-level incremental backup and cross-version deduplication, Synology Hyper Backup allows for multi-version backup to various destinations including Synology NAS and cloud storage.

Ÿ   Cloud and file syncing: The revamped Cloud Station Suite is now perfect for businesses with speedier performance, group permissions, and bandwidth control.  Synology’s exclusive Intelliversioning algorithm keeps the most relevant historical version of each file while saving storage space.

Ÿ   Anywhere access to multimedia files: The beautifully redesigned Video Station and DS video include offline transcoding for watching movies and videos anytime, anywhere. Plus, Synology’s array of multimedia apps work with more platforms, such as the new Apple TV, Apple Watch, and Windows 10.

Ÿ   Strengthened security: For more advanced control over application framework, DSM 6.0 provides role-based access for non-root WebAPI. You can tackle authentication challenges with DSM 6.0’s support for the 802.1X protocol, or save time and energy when executing your SSL strategy thanks to Let’s Encrypt integration.

Ÿ   More great features: DSM 6.0 expands support for Btrfs file system to Synology NAS equipped with select 64-bit processors. DSM 6.0 also introduces many more useful features, such as full-content search indexing, 64-bit architecture, modularization of less essential applications, improved accessibility for visually impaired users, and a redesigned interface for mobile devices.

The Google Chromecast has been a top seller since its debut.

Google has announced that its casting technology app for IOS and Android has been officially rebranded as Google Cast instead of Chromecast.  The app functions mainly as a set up wizard for Chromecast devices as well as an easy portal to Google Cast compatible apps. The rebranding has been a long-time-coming as the company has supported a number of other decices besides the Chromecast since the introduction of its Android TV platform beggining with the rollout of the Google Nexus player as well as integrated Android TV systems. Products have been marketing themselves using phrazes like “it has a chromecast instide” which really confuses the matter. The key for Google is the casting not the Chromecast itself which is nothing more than a handy reciever for wireless devices and computers.

So starting shortly users will be able to download a new Google Cast app for their devices. While the app will have the same name the function will remain the same. It’s ability to remain platform nutral could prove very popular with Smart TV manufacturers. VIZIO is rolling out a new line of TV’s with Google Cast built in as it’s main app access. Otherwise the TV will operate like a TV with no smart features. This means that users will not download apps to their sets through an interface like Android TV, WebOS or any other GUI.

Is this bad news for Android TV?
Android TV is an intergal part of a recently introduced line of Sony TV’s and was featured on many sets at the  2016 CES but the introduction of TV’s that eschew the more immersive UI in favor of the minimalist approach of a Google Cast reciever should be discouraging to any app developers who have bet on Android TV as a wide spread smart TV solution as apposed to a platform tied to consoles like The NVIDIA Shield, Nexus Player or Razer Forge. It bears watching to see if more Android TV models will be announced. Currently Sony boasts 8 Android TV powwered models which integrate both smart apps and its game service. Sharp debuted two Android TV powered sets in 2015 but neither the UE30 or the UH30 is available at a major big box store, though they are out there with smaller sellers and Phillips manufactures a few models though currently there are none available in the US according to representatives from the company. As more companies move prioritise their own smart TV interfaces we have to wonder if the platform will grow going forward or meet the same fate as its predecessor Google TV.

Maddy GTV is a full Internet channel.

The Space Opera Channel, an outgrowth of MaddyGTV, has been shuttered by the Roku based TV network. The channel which offered selections from independent studios as well as a popular selection of fan films was unable to support itself and proved to be a loss leader for the company over time.

At the heart of the revenue problem was its most popular feature. Fan films. Paul Gorman, a MaddyGTV executive explained to The Streaming Advisor that While many of its viewers regularly streamed the films, based on popular science fiction and comic book characters, the channel was unable to profit from the views due to laws preventing entities from selling advertisements associated with copyrighted content. Maddy GTV had hoped that the inclusion of fan films would drive interest in the channel and help it grow a base of customers for the rest of the content but the views needed for profitability failed to materialize. Instead, what transpired amounted to a bandwidth drain on the company’s servers which has the same effect in the Streaming world as like leaving a faucet running nonstop on a water bill.

The top 10 most popular shows from the Space Opera channel will be moved over to the main Maddy GTV channel. Maddy GTV still supports its other stations including MaddyGTV Late Night, Boom Sports and its new family-friendly MADDYMATION.

How do you get MaddyGTV
MaddyGTV is listed under Roku’s special interest category. Users can add it here

Kodi fans beware of the latest Apple TV software update. If you have sideloaded Kodi on to your Apple TV using the instructions from our video you may want to unselect automatic updates from your new Apple TV’s settings. The update that adds dictation for Siri, folders and more to the Apple TV will delete Kodi from the Apple TV. This is not to say that the program can not be re-added but it could mean this. It all depends on whether the developer is regularly submitting apps for evaluation. Keep this in mind when looking at upgrading your Apple TV. I have been in touch with some fans of our YouTube site who purchased an Apple TV simply because we showed how to add Kodi. It might be very disappointing to see all that work go up in smoke.

Two independent streaming related sources can confirm it. The NCAA Tournament is a bonanza for Streaming. What seemed like a novel second screen option 10 years ago has become a primary viewing opportunity for millions as streaming options have increased. Sling TV, which has been marketed as an inexpensive option for sports fans looking for ESPN and ESPN2 offers NCAA broadcast partners TNT and TBS in its standard best of Live TV Package. In the tournament’s first day alone the service reported astounding ratings especially when upsets were involved. All in all Thursday’s numbers indicated that by the end of double overtime victory by the University of Arkansas – Little Rock game, viewership increased by nearly 350% compared to game tipoff. Qwilt reports that NCAA Live was the second most visited website on the Net on March 18th just behind Netflix. Sports continue to be big business for all involved.
