The CW, home of major hit shows The Flash and Arrow along with critical hit My Crazy Ex Girlfriend will be pulling it’s programming off of Hulu beginning in October as it points its programming towards a new deal with Netflix which will grant the streaming network rights to its shows weeks after their season’s end. Citing disinterest in allowing Hulu to have access to full seasons of its shows in during the season in which they air CW will instead stream their shows, which will include Super Girl in 2016, on its
website and via apps for mobile platforms. If the CW has plans to continue to reach the younger viewers who power the network through streaming it must and most likely will have to put out apps on the top ott platforms.
When will a CW app be available for Roku, Fire TV and Apple TV?
At the moment, there have been no announcements concerning apps for Roku, Apple TV or the Fire TV but given the popularity of OTT apps and the fact that the CW already has an ad-supported model similar to the lower cost version of Hulu it is only logical to expect something. The CW app is currently available on IOS devices, Android devices, Xbox One, Xbox360, Windows 8 and the Amazon Fire Tablet. If CW plans to utilize its own in-house apps instead of Hulu it will have to jump onto the leading OTT platforms.
Half Way There
The network already has apps on Roku and Apple TV for its CW Seed app, so it is not exactly a great leap to imagine the network will roll out an app for the mother ship. The question is whether it will be available before the end of the summer.
