Netflix Show teaches and tickles

Why is the sky blue? I bet that the most commonly asked question that kids ask around the world. Well, there is a reason people ask. Because when you look up there it is, unless you live in England or Seattle under perpetual clouds. While you may know the answer off the top of your head or Google it to find an article and explain it back so that kids can understand Netflix has a better option. It’s called Ask The Story Bots.

Why Is The Sky Blue
That’s right my friends, Molepheus will blow your mind.

Ask The Story Bots which debuted on Netflix in August 2016 is a great educational show for kids that contains all of the hallmarks that make a good kids show. First and foremost it provides factual information. Its episodes cover scientific information and explain the processes that take place around us to help kids better understand the world. But being factual does not guaranty entertainment. The show is brightly animated and like Sesame Street and other strong children’s programming over the years, there is a healthy dose of humor thrown in for the parents that make watching the show with kids a lot of fun. For instance, there is an episode centered around where French Fries come from. In order to find out the crew is helped by a Molepheus based on Morpheus from the Matrix movie series who promises to show them a whole world they didn’t know existed. Later in the episode, Weird Al Yankovic shows up posing as a mild-mannered spa manager.

The company behind the show is Jibjab, the same folks who brought us year in review videos and other fun viral content over the years. The characters themselves have been on the scene since 2012 when Jibjab unleashed them through videos books and other media. The Netflix show is only 6 episodes long but there is also a companion show called StoryBots Super Songs with more fun for the kids.

Netflix has a lot of titles. The service currently has 4,033 movies and documentaries and  5,344 overall titles available. And out of all of those movies TV Shows and documentaries, Netflix’s algorithm chooses no more than 75 titles for a category called “Trending Now” at least in a comparison between the Netflix iPad app and the Netflix app on my Roku Streaming Stick. So I found it very interesting to see Lethal Weapon listed as one of the trending titles. In fact not only is the first chapter in the series part of the grouping but LW3 and LW4 also made the list. We think that the trend points to something important for Fox. The network behind the new Lethal Weapon series may well have a hit on its hands.

When we first noticed Lethal Weapon as a title we could not help but notice that it will be expiring on October 1. Seeing that we decided to manually check the rest of the titles on the list of Trending Now. This is because as people who follow the company know, there are monthly reports about what will be coming and leaving the service each month. Of the 72 other titles, (besides the Lethal Weapon movies), listed in the Trending Now category, only 4 movies (Beverly Hills Cop, Beverly Hills Cop 2 Back To the Future and Back To The Future 2) were also on their way out in October. There is a long list of departing titles in October but it’s mostly reality shows, see here . I don’t think I missed any. So this means that the trending titles are not necessarily boosted by what is about to leave.

Flaws in Our Thinking
Lethal Weapon is not the only older title in this category which includes Contact, Escape from LA and Kingpin  along with 90’s TV shows Friends and Star Trek Voyager. And unless we have missed something  none of those other movies listed are being made into a new series. Star Trek, of course, is getting another shot on TV with CBS’s upcoming project. So it could be that the inclusion of the Mel Gibson and Danny Glover is a coincidence.

The Ratings Have been Strong So Far
Besides our own hunches, the ratings for the show appear to have gotten off to a fast start. The series debuted to a strong start as the show tied Designated Survivor as the highest-rated Wednesday new series. This week the series had a small drop as new shows begin to roll out. It could be that our theory on this is very thin, anorexic even. But It will be fun to see where things go from here. If you have not seen the new Lethal Weapon series you can check it out through Fox’s apps or Hulu. It has great action sequences and snappy dialogue that harkens back the source material. But if you get inspired to knock out the originals you best get to binging right now.

FX Show, the People VS OJ Simpson is coming to Netflix. The show, which is a dramatisation of the murder investigation and eventual exoneration of OJ Simpson launched this year on the Fox network amid renewed interest in the case due to its recent 20 year anniversary. Andocumentaryentery about the same topic aired to rave reviews this summer. Despite the current curfuffle surrounding Netflix and its subscriber numbers the online streaming network continues to add both original content and highly sought after cable and network TV Shows.

The all-new Voltron launching on Netflix this month will be an update to the original series from Japan that rose to fame with a generation of kids brought up on Transformers and GI Joe. It continues a noticeable trend from Netflix of promoting series with an eye towards children of the 1980’s and 1990’s. The Streaming Network will also be adding a host of other TV shows and films including the first three Jurassic Park films and more to pass the time as temperatures begin to heat up and the kids come home from school. See the list bellow.

For all of the talk this week about Netflix’s deal with Disney finally coming into full effect in September, streaming fans should keep in mind that the Disney/Marvel/Pixar titles we only part of an overall strategy from Netflix to future proof the streaming network. While I think it is amusing that so many entertainment outlets finally realize that Netflix is a company that acts and maneuvers 5 steps ahead of its competition we have been reporting on Netflix’s long game for a year or more. This is why Netflix decided against the EPIX deal. In fact, the plan went into effect shortly after Netflix dropped its agreement with STARZ. But at the time, the over-reactionary blogosphere and many mainstream news outlets decided to write clickbait stories about the death of Netflix and the rise of Hulu and Amazon. So instead of simply recalling what has already been covered here and in other places, Let’s take a look at another piece of Netflix’s master plan. Netflix Original Series.

When Netflix first began planning for the future, which is about to be the present and announced an investment in original and exclusive content in the wake of dropping STARZ the idea of original streaming content was a novel one. While HBO and other cable networks had been building libraries of series for years streaming had been relegated making whatever it could get the rights to for the least amount of money available and in the case of many outlets, it still is. But when Netflix announced House Of Cards it was the first drop in a torrent. The service has quietly built a massive library of original titles. How massive?  Netflix currently has 137 original titles in its catalogue. If that number sounds too big log in and see for yourself. Right now there are 31 of its shows renewed for another season. At least 14 Netflix originals including Marvel’s Daredevil, are pending and those are just a percentage of the over 137 Netflix original productions available via the service. The streaming network’s stunning growth of originals was spurred by the company’s interest in exclusive content and a lack of interest in overpaying for content that could be found on multiple services.

Not all of Netflix’s originals are TV series, they include original movies, TV shows, documentaries and a growing library of one-shot specials featuring stand-up comedians. The dearth of programming on Netflix compared to the offerings from its rival Amazon is stunning. Currently, Amazon, which has been releasing its own original content including numerous pilots over the past 3 years has only 6 original series set to be renewed including the critically acclaimed Transparent. Many of the series the company has put out never went any further than the pilot episode, but to be fair that is part of Amazon’s model, which invites users to choose among numerous shows as to which will be made into a series.

Not all of Netflix’s investments are Emmy-nominated hits but they provide a strong dose of insight into what the company’s strategy is. Netflix does not value catalogues that offer the same thing Amazon and Hulu do. And it’s quite apparent that over 75 million customers don’t either. The original series though do include the ever growing Marvel Movie Universe based series that began with Daredevil and now include Jessica Jones, the upcoming Luke Cage, Iron Fist and the recently announce Punisher. Marvel titles are viewing gold at the moment, but Netflix’s originals are not all dark and brooding. The big red machine also has a major hit with The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and while it was panned by almost everyone Netflix also caught lightning in a bottle with Fuller House. Its investment in children’s programming which includes shows from, Puss In Boots, based on the character from the Shrek franchise and Veggie Tales which builds on the success of the popular Christian based series. We have not even delved into Netflix’s investment in original movies.

So as Netflix moves forward with its strategy and locks down the top 10 movies of the next few years which will undoubtedly be dominated by Marvel and the Starwars franchise it will be supplementing them with a quickly growing library of titles that nobody else has. We will see if it continues to win out going forward.

The Netflix experience on the Roku has been at the heart of the product since its very first incarnation which was borne out of a project within Netflix. While the company quickly expanded to include Amazon Instant and the MLB online offerings Netflix has remained at the core of the streaming platform since day one. The Netflix experience on Roku has been given a tweak recently to allow for a category based search more like something found on the website to go along with its custom created categories based on one’s viewing habits. As creative as it is to have categories like Dark Visually Striking movies or Because you Liked “The Day The Earth Stood Still” the companies almost retro addition should help new and old users better discover the content especially in the wake of dropping its deal with Epix. There are categories for recently added, TV (which is a bit general) New Releases Children and family and so forth. In addition Netflix will now launch programming as soon as a user clicks on its corresponding icon as opposed to after one presses play. We expect to see a bevy of new features as the company ramps up its OS and product line. To see how the new menu works check out the new video below.
