The DC Universe is all but done as a streaming service going forward. While there was no specific date given as to when DC comics chief Jim Lee spoke to The Hollywood Reporter saying that Original DC Universe content is going to be moving to HBO Max. This is a move we long expected as the DC Universe service has been whittled down since AT&T merged with Warner Media. The service has been loosing clout and exclusives since HBO Max was announced with Doom Patrol season two as part of HBO Max and Star Girl Season 1 being available on the CW App for free since launch.
“The original content that is on DCU is migrating to HBO Max. Truthfully, that’s the best platform for that content,” Lee said. “The amount of content you get, not just DC , but generally from WarnerMedia, is huge and it’s the best value proposition, if I’m allowed to use that marketing term. We feel that is the place for that.”
Lee did not specify whether “original Content” also meant the number of original animated films from Warners DC animated library. But it does seem to imply that the older content such as the Wonder Woman series will not be a priority on the new service. Recently we pointed out that HBO Max already had more DC titles than the DC Universe. On the other hand Lee did seem to imply that access to digital comics and community interaction would continue to be a priority for the company. So this may well mean that DC Universe will no longer be a streaming service but will instead be a place to download and read content as well as interact through forums and buy merchandise from DC.
