Warner Brothers Discovery was the hot story of 2022 with breathless reports pouring in for weeks about what shows would be canceled, movies that should have never been pitched (The Wonder Twins) being dropped, and furthermore the company passed on some major new projects that had been in development specifically for HBO Max.
One of the most notable titles that HBO Max passed on was a new Batman animated series called Batman Caped Crusader. At the time of its cancelation as far as on HBO Max, the company said that the show could be shopped to other platforms. Well according to Deadline Warner Bros Discovery may have found a partner of choice. And it means the rich will get richer, or I suppose poorer depending on how much they are paying to be part of the DC comics family. This is because WBD will ship yet unnamed animated content to Amazon’s Prime Video service.
The Batman project was set to be a collaboration with Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves for HBO Max. Fans were looking forward to what they considered a spiritual successor of Batman The Animated Series.
Our guess here is speculative but considering that the announcement specifically pointed out that the deal was for DC animated content we feel confident that the biggest retailer in the world bought the rights to the Caped Crusader. The question is, does this mean that DC will move its popular animated universe to Amazon so that it can concentrate on building out its interconnected content on its signature platform, or will Amazon simply be the home of new projects that HBO Max does not want?
Either way, the coming deal is good news for comic book content fans. We will monitor this story going forward.
