According to reporting by Janko Roettgers (still denied by the reported partners themselves) an advertising company “The Trade Desk” is working with the audio company Sonos on a home theater-styled operating system for TV’s that will be built into a new streaming device that the company is designing, based on Android.
If you are thinking “Isn’t there already an Android OS for TVs” you would be correct. In fact there are at least three out there, the official Android TV OS, Google TV and At this point Fire OS, which is what you will find on Amazon’s streaming devices and TVs. So this is not new ground. But the device may well offer a new take on how to use Android to build an OS. It is a very versatile platform. Whether it is built off of the standard Android TV os or the base Android 14 or whatever it is called in the next iteration won’t be apparent until the companies involved make the speculation official.
Roettgers, who has a golden reputation as a reporter in the streaming world, said he has multiple sources that have informed him of the upcoming device and OS. The questions are when is it coming and what will it do to make it stand out in an already crowded marketplace. Because it is the brainchild of an advertising company you can be sure that ad-revenue will be a driver for the product.
Consumers should not expect to see anything new on the market before the first quarter of 2025.
