Ok to be fair Only Fans had not truly announced that it was shutting down. But its recent announcement that it would ban adult content creators was essentially a move that would have drastically changed the look and profile of the company. The subscription service that has become a landing ground for creators who wished to make money by producing adult content did not launch specifically with that purpose in mind, but that is how it has come to be identified. Thus a call to pull all of its adult content other than nudity that did not zoom in on certain body parts or include simulated sex acts or actual acts and so on came as a big shock to those who had made a home on the format. Sometimes the narrative gets away from you. A site that starts as an open forum can get hijacked by a certain viewpoint. And in the case of Only Fans, the service because synonymous with let’s just call it performative adult actions. Only Fans does not call itself an adult content site. Its home page looks much more like Facebook than Pornhub. Yet this is what it has come to be known for.
Only Fans sighted no moral reason for dropping the content. It’s not as though it got squeamish suddenly. It was in response to concerns with financial partners. It was concerned that it would not have a way to handle cash flow.
The adult video space is becoming a precarious one lately with an emphasis being placed on stamping out child pornography and abuses of other types. It is understandable that there are companies that do not wish to be associated with this type of video content. You never see adult movies advertised during NFL broadcasts right? Ads that imply nudity sure. But that lets people use their imagination. It lets companies say “Now why did your head go there you dirty thing. How do you know when that towel dropped the person was not wearing a full outfit”.
Pulling adult content from only fans would have likely sunk the site. It recently announced plans to put apps on streaming platforms. And here is a guess that it was not because people wanted to pay for workout tips that they could find free all over the place. There is pornography free all over the Internet as well . This is not going to be news to anybody. But there appears to be a certain appeal to subscribing to individuals. I can’t explain the reasoning myself, but the paychecks of the creators mean that they built an audience specific to them.
Therefore, Only Fans essentially decided not to shut down. Prove me wrong.
