Fox will be launching a new streaming service on August 21st called Fox One. For a $19.99 a month subscribers will get access to Fox TV stations locally, Fox News, FS1, FS2, Fox Business, Fox Deportes, The Big 10 Network, and Fox Weather.
Is this a good deal for consumers? I don’t know. It all really depends on a couple of things. One of them is are you a super fan of Fox news coverage who doesn’t want to pay for anything else outside of Fox’s ecosystem. $20 a lot to pay for a couple of Networks. The other question is do you live somewhere where there is no other way to get Fox’s broadcast station without a pay service? The Fox sports channels do you have live sports but to be honest it is not usually the marquee action of the weekend.
Often the major college football games are either on broadcast Networks or the ESPN family of Networks.
The new service costs about a fourth of what YouTube TV and Hulu with live TV costs and those services have a ton more overall content. Reporting from multiple sources said that Fox CEO Lachlan Murdock wanted to keep the price at a level that only attracted people who were not pay TV subscribers already. This means he’s targeting people who either for some reason couldn’t sign up for cable or a similar service or would not sign up for cable and similar services. At such a steep price I really wonder who will jump at it.
At the streaming advisor we’ve always encouraged people to use antennas when it’s a workable solution. I myself have one and it’s delivered me network broadcasts reliably ever since it was installed.
If you’re thinking about the service take a good hard look at what it is that you watch and decide whether it’s worth $20.
