T-Mobile has been making dalliances into the pay-TV world lately first with its launch of TVision and the surrounding controversies around the service. But the company may be looking to offer a much more substantial service on the back of its 4G home internet network.
The service already has over 100,000 customers and aims to bring internet service to 500,000 rural customers by the end of 2021. TmoNews, a site that markets itself as the unofficial T-Mobile blog, is reporting that as during its virtual analyst day T-Mobile promised that it will be talking more about its cable plans later this month.
Could T-Mobile be putting together a service to reach underserved populations? This has been mainly the domain of satellite TV in the past but T-Mobile may be able to solve two problems at once in the underserved areas. Providing both TV and Internet. There are a number of places known as broadband deserts that have no dependable access to high-speed internet and therefore are cut off from a number of important services as highlighted during the virtual school boom that has followed the Covid-19 outbreak. With 5G on the way the 4G band could open up more or even serve as the backdrop for a future 5G network going forward. 4G has proven quite capable of delivering clear consistent video and internet connectivity by providing hotspots and other internet services when needed.
The company could position itself right in the sweet spot of the next gen TV world if it plays its cards right.
