Amazon Buys MGM In Billion Dollar Deal

Amazon Prime Video may be the permanent home of the 007 movies. While the collection shifts from service to service over time, Amazon’s purchase of MGM could place the valuable property squarely on Amazon Prime or even IMDB TV.

Amazon purchased MGM for 8.45 billion in a move that will give Amazon over 4000 movies and 17,000 hours of TV content to do with as it pleases. Most would expect the content to land on one of the companies own branded services. The content should prove to be a substantial pickup for the company that sells seemingly everything.

Is this really about getting old content? In the modern streaming age, viewership has become more about new originals than legacy programming. So the purchase could lead to more IP to be used for Amazon original movies and TV shows, which is the direction streaming has been heading for the last 5 years.

The move is the biggest purchase the company has made since Whole Foods.
