Mulan will be streaming on Disney+ after all. but not the way people hoped it might. Disney announced that the movie will stream on its pay service but not as part of the package that customers pay for monthly. Disney+ customers will pay $29.99 to stream the movie. The cost is actually $10.00 more than the cost of previous premium streaming options like Trolls World Tour or the Apple TV exclusive Grey Hound.
Why is it so expensive to stream one movie? Because it is meant to make up for the lack of a nationwide big-screen roll out. The cost better simulates a total of 2-3 members of a family seeing a movie. The average cost of a movie ticket in 2019 was $9.26. But for many families the at home price also saves families the cost of concessions.
A previous report showed that movies that appeal to kids have performed very well during the pandemic. But it remains to be seen if the formula will work at a higher price.
