There could be a new Mi Box on the way. When the price of a tech product starts to fall (outside of holiday sales) at big box stores that usually means one of two things. Either the product is failing and being liquidated to create shelf space for something else or its current model is being replaced by something better. We mention this because Mi Box prices are falling at Walmart. The cost has dropped from $69.00 to $57.00. The product had held strong in the $70.00 range for some time as an inexpensive 4k Android TV option.
We are betting that the product is going to get overhauled. Why? Because first of all Xiomi, the maker of the MiBox still lists the set-top streamer prominently on its website. Even more importantly, the company released a new Mi Box as an update to the Chinese version of its box.
The update which featured 2 new boxes dropped in February. At the time there was no announcement concerning the US market. But it would be logical to expect that a steep drop in the price of the current unit a month after its Chinese counterpart was updated indicates a change is coming.
The Chinese product still features Android 6.0 which is odd considering that the platform will soon move to 8.0 but it also features updated Bluetooth and other hardware performance upgrades. No reason to get too hung up about the changes to the overseas model at this point because it may be very different in the US.
