Spotify, a music and podcasting app, will soon start carrying movies and TV shows from Cineverse. But the question is why? The content includes programming from both Cineverse’s channel partners as well as additional titles curated from the company’s content library of more than 70,000 films and television shows.
Titles from Cineverse’s portfolio of free, ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels now available via video on Spotify include Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan, Land of the Lost, Entrepreneur Elevator Pitch, The FBI Files and comedy specials from Jeff Dunham, Jim Gaffigan, Eddie Griffin, Tiffany Hadish, Kathleen Madigan and Gary Owen, and more.
Again why?
Spotify has for years been the go to place for music and podcasts. On the other hand there are countless places to watch movies and TV shows that are well established. A move towards free ad-supported TV show and movie content on Spotify feels like putting a hat on a hat. Yes the service does have video podcasts, but that is a totally different animal than a TV show. Even though they are video based for the most part video podcasts are just a person speaking into a mic on camera.
Bringing in the same TV content that someone can find on Tubi does not enhance anything about Spotify. It actually has the potential to clog the lane when it comes to content discovery.
