T-Mobile could be following AT&T into the TV business. While T-Mobile already offers various incentives to customers by zero rating certain streaming services, Streaming Media’s Troy Dreier is reporting that T-Mobile may be looking to have its own mobile-based TV skinny bundle. While there is next to no detail as to what T-Mobile truly plans to do with the offering, which is said to be on the horizon for 2018, I would expect it to play along with the practice seen by cable companies and other providers. That being the company will allow users to access their services without it affecting data usage while use of other services will affect data. This could be a way to differentiate between its own service other offerings from AT&T and Dish.
Cell phone carriers have been leveraging streaming services as incentives to chose one carrier over another. For instance, T-Mobile currently offers Netflix on Us which provides a free Netflix subscription for qualifying customers. AT&T is offering HBO to customers on certain plans. So the logical next step is for cell phone companies to offer their own skinny bundles.
If the New rules for Internet data usage go into effect having a chance to watch TV without a traditional cable package via a cell phone company could become big business.
