Amazon Makes Major Women’s Soccer Partner

Women’s sports have made huge strides in the last 20 years in attendance and ratings. It is a far cry from the days were female athletes were only talked about when it came to gold medals. A big part of that is that forward-thinking investors decided to cash in on the popularity of sports like Women’s soccer after a successful Olympic run leading to the founding of he National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Anchored by Olympic stars the league grew over time to merit national coverage as more than just a side feature.

This week Prime Video and the NWSL announced a new, multiyear rights agreement that will make the streamer a new home of one of the most prestigious soccer leagues in the world. The addition of 27 NWSL matches brings premium soccer to Prime, which provides unparalleled savings, convenience, and entertainment, all in a single membership, and strengthens the year-round schedule of Prime Video’s growing portfolio of exclusive live sports content.

Beginning in 2024, Prime Video will be the exclusive home for 27 total matches each season, including 25 regular-season games as part of a “Game of the Week” on Friday nights throughout the season. Additionally, Prime Video will stream a season-opening kickoff match, and a quarterfinal playoff contest. Prime Video will handle the production of each game, and announce details, including on-air talent and its 2024 schedule, at a later date.

“We are honored to collaborate with the NWSL as it continues to grow into one of the most prestigious leagues in the world, with remarkable athletes and world-class competition,” said Marie Donoghue, VP U.S. sports content & partnerships, Amazon. “We are committed to providing premium content for Prime members and championing women’s sports—this landmark deal achieves both, and we can’t wait for 2024.”

“Our new multi-partner media rights agreements fundamentally change the game for our league and the players who take the pitch each week. On behalf of the NWSL, our owners and players, I want to commend Prime Video for investing in our league and affirmatively declaring to the marketplace that this league is exciting, valuable, and important,” said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman. “We have taken great care to ensure our games are discoverable by increasing our reach in order to expose new audiences to everything that makes our league special, and we’re thrilled to team with Prime Video. This is the beginning of our future.”
